The Gegenzauberer were once a radically anti-magic fringe group in Anover and Avari. Thanks to their role in the Vierzhenten Accords War of , they gained power in Anover of 64-67 DB and their role in the Thalassan Invasion, they became vassal kings starting in 76 DB.

The Gegenzauberer launched a Gegenzauberer Pogroms against magic users that lasted from 76-112 DB. Tens of thousands were killed under suspicion of magic use. Many magic users fled to Vierzhenten and, in 166 DB, took their independence as well as much of the western portion of that island.

The Sharswold War of Independence led to a decline in power by the Gegenzauberer. They are replaced by the even more radical Versklaven movement, which labels magic users as tainted and enslaves them for the good of the state.

The Gegenzauberer remained a minority party in Anover and Avari until, in 228 DB, they teamed up with the Vierzhenten to stop the Versklaven. As of 615 DB, they rule East Anover and have an uneasy detente with Vierzhenten, West Anover, and Avari.
